The North East enters the fray
County
Chess resumed after World War one with a continuation of the Roses battles and
increased competition from the north-east. The Yorkshire team which defeated
Lancashire in 1921 had F. D. Yates and H. E. Atkins on the top two boards. On
board 23 in that match there were two names more famous later on, A. R. B.
Thomas and C. R. Gurnhill, and when Lancashire failed to defeat Cheshire in 1922
the latter had W. A. Fairhurst on board 12. 1928 saw Alfred Milner’s first
match as Lancashire’s captain. by 1931 Durham and Northumberland had been
allowed to combine forces and gave a Lancashire team led by R. J. Broadbent and
G. Abrahams (who both lost!) at tough match. this should not have been
surprising as they had already defeated Yorkshire. In 1932 Lancashire’s defeat
by the combined team lead to the BCM commenting “Members of the NCCU will
consider that this event justifies, or does not justify, their policy in
allowing two (apparently) weaker counties to join forces”. It is surprising in
view of the close battles in the Northern matches that Lancashire were the only
Northern County to achieve regular success in the national championship.
